But to reduce him to just “the other lanista” misses a fascinating portrait of ambition, pragmatism, and the brutal reality of Roman social climbing. At first glance, Solonius and Batiatus are cut from the same cloth. Both are lanistae (owners of gladiatorial training houses) in Capua. Both crave the respect of the Roman nobility. Both are desperate to escape the stench of blood and sand that clings to their profession.
