I’m digitizing my old BBC Robin Hood S01 DVDs (480p/576i native) and debating the preset.

Up for grabs is the first season of the BBC’s Robin Hood – the gritty, action-packed retelling starring Jonas Armstrong. The x265 rescale looks surprisingly good for 480p content

The source is grainy British television from the mid-2000s. I tried a standard x264 (CRF 18) and got ~500MB/ep, but the grain looked blocky. Switched to and the file size dropped to ~280MB/ep while keeping the grain intact without macroblocking.
