Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a victim of sequel-itis in its most expensive form: bigger, louder, longer, and dumber. It mistakes excess for excitement and cameos for character development. For every thrilling lasso swing or Colin Firth expertly reloading an umbrella, there’s a tedious CGI robot dog fight or an inexplicably long scene of Elton John playing the piano.

The film opens with a devastating blow: the Kingsman organization is wiped out in seconds by a missile strike from a mysterious new villain. Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) survive, and following a "Doomsday Protocol" involving a bottle of vintage bourbon, they discover their American counterparts: Statesman. If you loved the first film’s hyper-violent, anarchic spirit, you’ll find scattered moments to enjoy—especially Pedro Pascal. But come prepared for a messy, overstuffed hangover. The original Kingsman was a surprise martini: dry, shaken, and potent. The Golden Circle is that same martini, but someone added Red Bull, glitter, and a cheap plastic sword.
