Clogged Ear From — Flight

Clogged Ear From — Flight

| Before Flight | During Flight | |---------------|----------------| | Use a decongestant nasal spray (e.g., oxymetazoline) 30–60 minutes before descent | Stay awake during descent | | Take an oral decongestant (e.g., pseudoephedrine) 1 hour before flight | Avoid sleeping through landing | | Treat allergies with antihistamines if needed | Use filtered earplugs | | Postpone flying if you have a severe cold, sinus infection, or active ear infection | Perform equalization maneuvers frequently | Consult your doctor before using decongestants if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disorder, or are pregnant. Prognosis In the vast majority of cases, ear barotrauma from flying resolves completely within a few hours to a day. Persistent fluid may take 1–2 weeks to clear. With proper prevention and timely maneuvers, future flights can be much more comfortable. Disclaimer: This information is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice.
