But George, bleeding and exhausted, looks up. “As above, so below,” he whispers. “If this is hell, then we have to become the opposite of what we were to get out.”

She assembles a small team: her loyal ex-boyfriend and cameraman, George; their wealthy financier, Benji; and two catacomb guides, Papillon and Souxie. Against the warnings of the Paris police, they enter through a hidden manhole cover after nightfall.

Scarlett understands. The stone isn’t an object—it’s a state of being. To gain immortality, she must sacrifice her selfish quest. To see the truth, she must face her deepest guilt: as a child, she found her father after his suicide and never told anyone she’d seen the note—because she was angry at him for leaving.
